Private Lessons

All Ages- All Levels- All Styles

I fell in love with music at the age of seven when my family bought our first piano. After receiving my degree in music from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2000, I began giving piano lessons in students’ homes. For the past eleven years I have worked with a wide range of students of all ages and levels, teaching a variety of musical styles.

Too many people I have met over the years have said, ” I used  to take piano lessons, but haven’t played in years”.  The most common reason was simply that they did not enjoy the music they were being taught.

My teaching goal is to give students the tools and skills they need, not just to learn how to play the piano, but to play what they love so they will continue making music for the rest of their lives.  While my students are expected to learn the essentials of musicianship – note reading, scales, technique and theory – I will teach them to play the music THEY want to play.

By placing an emphasis on chords, ear training and improvisation, my students learn to play a variety of styles including  pop, rock, blues and jazz.  I find when students learn this way  they are not just reproducing notes on a written page, but are able to feel the music and truly understand it.

Testimonials

“I have been taking piano lessons from Andrew for almost ten years, and I enjoy it so much that I upped my weekly lesson from 30 minutes to an hour a week.  Andrew teaches me to play the type of music I like to listen to, which many teacher’s won’t do, and that makes him an even better teacher.  I always try to take part in the bi-annual recitals that I enjoy very much.  I also enjoy listening to his other students play as well. “ – Guy Z., Deerfield

“Andrew is exceptionally knowledgeable about music theory, piano performance (from classical to jazz to popular), and how to teach the piano, step by step.  Because of his preparation, encouragement, enthusiasm, and remarkable patience, he is one our son’s favorite teachers.  We are very pleased with Andrew’s teaching, and strongly recommend him to help you or your kids reach their musical goals! ” – Chris and Iga S., Highland Park

“Andrew has brought the joy and passion of piano playing back into my life…plain and simple, he has and continues to teach an “old dog” new tricks!!!” – Lynne L., Deerfield
